[UPDATE] 3Y0Z – Bouvet 2018

The Bouvet Island DXpedition – 3YØZ
Press Release #6
June 27, 2017

In consultation with our new transportation partner Aerovias DAP, we continue to refine our plans for our Bouvet DXpedition. We expect to depart from King George Island, in the South Shetlands Islands on January 13, 2018. Our transit time to Bouvet will be between 9 and 11 days depending on weather and the sea state.

Upon arrival at Bouvet we will conduct reconnaissance flights to the island and select a campsite free of crevasses. As weather permits we will begin building our radio city on the ice and secure our infrastructure. Then antennas will go up, our equipment will be assembled and we will begin non-stop operations. We are planning to be at Bouvet for 21 days, and depending on weather and other factors we hope to be on the air for 14-16 days. Then we will return to either King George Island or Punta Arenas, Chile. All in all, we will be away from civilization for 6-7 weeks.

E6AG – Niue Island

E6AG – Niue Island

NEWS UPDATE by Grant VK5GR — This will be a one man holiday style Dxpedition with family, and so operating will be at times limited. I will try and plan some days when I will definitely be active (working around solar storms etc if needed) and publicise them at little closer to the day. Other days will be family time, and completely dependent on what we are doing while exploring this island paradise.

Station

The plan is to take a 500W station with a vertical folded monopole for 40m – 6m, which with a tuner may prove partially effective on 80m as well. The principle activity will be on digital modes (so I can operate when the family is asleep) but there will be some SSB activity as well. The rigs will be an Elecraft K3+KPA500+KAT500. The antenna has been designed and built by Steve VK5SFA. Follow this link for details. The digital interface will be a Microham Keyer II (which I hope to figure out how to get it to do FSK with the K3 before I leave ).

Dates

The trip will see us arrive in Niue on September 12th (Niue time) and I expect the station to be active by end of day on the 13th (VK stations please remember Niue is on the other side of the date line, so this will be well into the 14th of September for VK/ZL). I am in particular planning on being active during the CQ WW RTTY contest on the weekend of the 23rd/24th of September. Last day will be Monday 25th of September (as we fly home on Tuesday 26th via New Zealand).

QSL Details & Website

I will be arranging QSLing via OQRS (service TBC) and provided the Internet feed is reliable enough I hope to post logs daily (I am told it operates a bit “when it feels like it” so not sure just how good or bad it will be). An expedition Website is under construction and should be available in a few weeks. Look out for www.e6ag.net

Callsign

I have been in touch with the Niue authorities and have reserved the callsign E6AG for the activation. Licensing paperwork is still in progress however so this isn’t 100% confirmed (although I don’t expect it to change at this stage).

Status

We have reservations but not confirmed bookings for the airline (should be locked down in the next 24hrs) and we still need to confirm the accommodation so things could all head sideways yet, I also need to contact the IOTA team and confirm what their requirements are to confirm the activation so it can count. Other than that, leave from work is booked for everyone so as far as we are concerned we are going!

Wish me luck, and hope to hear you all on the air from the South Pacific!

Baker & Howland Island DXpedition

News Update – Baker & Howland Island DXpedition possible

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has agreed that a DXpedition to Baker and Howland Islands (KH1) — the fourth most-wanted DXCC entity — would be an acceptable use, but has detailed strict conditions under which it would issue a special use permit (SUP) to allow such use. The FWS recently completed a compatibility determination for Amateur Radio operation on Baker Island National Wildlife Refuge, and 2 dozen comments showed “strong support” for Amateur Radio operation on the ecologically sensitive island refuge, the FWS said. Baker Island is 1,830 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu — an 8-day voyage.

“While…not a wildlife dependent public use according to National Wildlife Refuge Administration Act of 1966, as amended, Amateur Radio operation is a use that assists in the management of the resources indirectly,” the FWS said in its Compatibility Determination, released on June 8. “By allowing Amateur Radio operators to visit the PRIMNM refuges, the refuges benefit through the ability of staff to visit remote island sites to monitor wildlife populations, habitats, detect invasive species introductions, and perform management actions that would otherwise require the Service to charter a vessel.”

Citing an estimated cost of at least $250,000 to charter a vessel with a 14-day layover, the FWS noted that “most of the remote island refuges within the PRIMNM are rarely visited due to budget constraints.”

Baker and Howland Islands are part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM), created by former President George W. Bush under the authority of the Antiquities Act of 1906. The monument was expanded by President Barack Obama.

The Compatibility Determination mandated 18 stipulations for Amateur Radio DXpeditions visiting the Refuge. Among them: “All General Conditions of the SUP would apply to Amateur Radio operator expeditions. This includes the Special Conditions that stipulate stringent quarantine procedures, vessel inspections and certifications, anchoring and landing requirements, wildlife avoidance measures, zero-impact requirements, and reporting requirements. Biosecurity requirements will be part of the SUP.”

A DXpedition to the Refuge could last up to 14 days, with only 12 days of radio operation, given that deployment and breakdown of the camp and radio equipment usually takes 2 days on each end of the trip, the FWS has estimated.

“Complete avoidance of seabird colonies will minimize nest disturbance and prevent burrow nest cave-ins,” the FWS said in its Compatibility Determination. “Activities on Baker Island will always attract the land crabs that inhabit this location. All efforts must be taken to avoid inadvertently feeding or entrapping these animals.”

The FWS would also have to approve QSL cards to ensure that they include “an informative or educational statement about the Refuge.” The FWS called QSLs “a valuable outreach tool.”
