NEWS UPDATE – The expedition team of UA3AKO, RA3AV and UA0KBG arrived safely to Providence Bay and all goes according to plan. The sea ice condition is satisfactory, air temperature near minus 15 degrees Celsius. The heavy caterpillar all-terrain vehicle and a snowmobile are prepared for transition to Arakamchechen (AS-071). The main and spare gazoline generators are checked. Now the team prepare for an early morning departure on April 6th local time (UTC+12). Hey gang,
I’m looking for a few skilled HF operators to join me on a cruise to Central Kiribati (T31 / OC-043) for a full week on Nikumaroro Island. We would sail on the Reef Endeavour from Fiji along with the TIGHAR organization which has been searching to learn where Amelia Earhart might have met her demise.

I’m in touch with the organizers and they are OK with having a group set up tents, tables and antennas for a DXpedition. They will be providing transportation back and forth from the island to the cruise ship twice a day, so operators can eat and sleep on the ship if desired. I cruised on this ship in Fiji and know the diving facilities and staff are first-rate. Nikumaroro is a remote uninhabited island in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area so this would also provide diving experiences of a lifetime. And for non-divers they have a nice glass bottom boat too.
And, if these guys are right about Amelia ditching on Nikumaroro and find her aircraft off the reef, well, wouldn’t it be cool to be there?
Of course, Dom’s (3Z9DX) recent T31 activation on Kanton Island took a bite out of demand for this rare DXCC, yet it still remains #17 on the Clublog global most wanted list. I’m considering going but need a few more operators to make the logistics work out in getting all of the gear to Fiji we would need to make a serious effort. A Rotuma activation (Clublog #55) might also be possible by flying up there in advance and having the ship pick us up on the way to Nikumaroro (it stops briefly at Rotuma on the way up and at Futuna on the way back).
It’s about $2k r/t to Fiji and $9k for the cruise.

Je suis à la recherche de quelques qualifiés HF opérateurs pour se joindre à moi sur une croisière à Central Kiribati (T31 / OC-043) pour une semaine complète sur Nikumaroro Island. Nous naviguions sur le Reef Endeavour de Fidji avec l’organisation TIGHAR qui a cherché à savoir où Amelia Earhart aurait pu rencontrer sa disparition.

Je suis en contact avec les organisateurs et ils sont OK avec un groupe mis en place des tentes, des tables et des antennes pour une DXpedition. Ils fourniront le transport aller-retour de l’île au bateau de croisière deux fois par jour, ainsi les opérateurs peuvent manger et dormir sur le bateau si désiré. J’ai navigué sur ce navire à Fidji et de connaître les plongées et le personnel est de premier ordre. Nikumaroro est une île isolée et déserte dans la zone protégée des îles Phœnix, ce qui fournirait également des expériences de plongée d’une vie. Et pour les non-plongeurs, ils ont un joli bateau à fond de verre aussi.
Et, si ces gars-là ont raison d’Amélie s’embarquer sur Nikumaroro et trouver son avion au large du récif, eh bien, ne serait-il pas cool d’être là ?
Bien sûr, l’activation récente de T3 de Dom (3Z9DX) sur l’île de Kanton a pris une bouchée de la demande pour ce DXCC rare, pourtant elle reste encore # 17 sur la liste de la plupart des souhaités de Clublog. Je pense aller mais ont besoin d’un peu plus d’opérateurs pour faire la logistique work out en obtenir tous les engins à Fidji, nous aurions besoin de faire un effort sérieux. Une activation de Rotuma (Clublog # 55) pourrait également être possible en volant là haut à l’avance et ayant le navire nous chercher sur le chemin de Nikumaroro (il s’arrête brièvement à Rotuma sur le chemin et à Futuna sur le chemin du retour).
C’est environ $ 2k r / t à Fiji et $ 9k pour la croisière.

UPDATE / CANCELLED – This weekend, the XF2L team was scheduled to operate on Lobos Island, NA-221, however weather conditions are getting worse, predicting adverse conditions to navigation. For this reason the harbor master, has decided that on Friday, the day on which the outbound trip to the island is scheduled, the port is closed to the navigation of small boats. The provider of transportation services tells us that we would have problems even for the return to land. For this reason the operation scheduled this weekend 24 to 27 March 2017 is cancelled due to weather conditions. We hope that in May the weather conditions will allow us to visit isla de lobos as it is scheduled.
MISE À JOUR / ANNULÉ – Ce week-end, l’équipe XF2L devait opérer sur l’île de Lobos, NA-221, mais les conditions météorologiques s’aggravent, prédisant des conditions défavorables à la navigation. Pour cette raison, le capitaine du port a décidé que le vendredi, jour prévu pour le départ de l’île, le port est fermé à la navigation des petits bateaux. Le fournisseur de services de transport nous dit que nous aurions des problèmes même pour le retour à la terre. Pour cette raison, l’opération prévue ce week-end du 24 au 27 mars 2017 est annulée en raison des conditions météorologiques. Nous espérons qu’en mai les conditions météorologiques nous permettront de visiter isla de lobos comme prévu.

MARCH 19 – The VQ917JC license I asked for just came through, so start looking for Jim ND9M to be on the air as VQ917JC. Jim told OPDX he will not make an effort on 60m at this time. His operating hours are still limited to 1200-1600z max which doesn’t do much good for the NA/SA ops. He states that he will probably focus on 30, 20, and 17 meters just to get VQ9 into some logs. Jim also mentioned he did bring his satellite equipment. QSL via his home callsign.

The OC-098 IOTA group was last on the air more than 22 years ago, and as such is in demand by 92% of the IOTA membership.

FEBRUARY 8 – Members of the Russian Robinson Club (RRC) – namely Aleksandr Ivanov RA3AV, Yuri Savchenko UA0KBG and Victor Slabodchikov UA3AKO will be on the air from Arakamchechen Island, Chukotka IOTA AS-071, RRA RR-12-02, RDA CК-06, RFF-165 (NEW ONE), RLHA – NEW ONE, WLOTA – NEW ONE between April 7th and 17th. The dates are tentative and depend on local logistics and weather conditions.
Team plans to be on the island at least 5- 7 days. Two operating positions will be on the air on 40, 30, 20 and 17 meters, CW and SSB. Equipment to be used: two Elecraft K3’s, FT-857 (for redundancy), 500 watts power amplifiers. The antennas are: 4 SQ for 20m, GP or 2 elements switchable for 30m, GP for 17m and GP for 40m. The electricity to be taken from two power generators (main and redundant).
QSL via UA3AKO (OQRS, direct and QSL bureau). We’re looking for technical possibility for uploading log periodically during the expedition. Possibly we will use the satellite phone for this.

NEWS UPDATE – The team is now on Dikson Island and report all is ok as they continue their journey.
FEBRUARY 27 — The RT9K/9 team reached Sopkarga polar station. They are now waiting for the guys from Norilsk to join them. Thereafter, the full team travels further to first island.
FEBRUARY 22 – RT9K team stopped in Gyda. They need to fix two snowmobiles and two sledges. Meanwhile, they sent images and video for DX-World readers.

February 14, 2017 the over-snow expedition of “The Legend of the Arctic” – RT9K/9 – on the islands of the Kara Sea begins. The expedition will take place under flags of Russian Robinson Club and the Russian Geographical Society, devoted to the 120th anniversary of the Arctic expedition of Fridtjof Nansen on the vessel “Fram” in 1893-1896.

Participants plan autonomous passing of a route on 7 snowmobiles: from the Yamal Peninsula to Dikson Island (AS-005) to the extreme northern point of Eurasia continent – Cape Chelyuskin further to the planned islands. At the movement to the north on islands warehouses with fuel and food for work on air on the way back will be left. It is expected that island activity will begin with the most northern island Gelland-Gansena (AS-054) along a route, but will depend on ice and weather situation (now along the coast and around islands there is open water!). By calculations – in the first of March. Broadcast of an online route will be available on the Internet and amateur network APRS. L’expédition se déroulera sous les drapeaux du Russian Robinson Club et de la Russian Geographical Society, consacrée au 120e anniversaire de l’expédition arctique de Fridtjof Nansen sur le navire ‘Fram’ en 1893-1896.

Les participants prévoient le passage autonome d’un itinéraire sur 7 motoneiges: de la péninsule de Yamal à l’île Dikson (AS-005) jusqu’à l’extrême nord du continent eurasien – le cap Chelyuskin, après les îles prévues. Au mouvement vers le nord sur les entrepôts des îles avec du carburant et de la nourriture pour le travail sur l’air sur le chemin du retour sera laissé. Il est prévu que l’activité des îles commencera avec l’île la plus au nord de Gelland-Gansena (AS-054) le long d’une route, mais dépendra de la glace et la situation météorologique (maintenant le long de la côte et autour des îles il ya l’eau libre!).
