For more than 50 years during this early period, sealing occurred only around the Kerguelen islands. During the \ue0c0rst period (1908-1911) they transferred the rights to two companies, Aktieselskabet Kerguelen and Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des P\u00eacheries de Kerguelen (Arnaud and Beurois, 1996).&nbsp; Storm, Bull &amp; Co. which was active from 1908-1911 established a whaling factory station at Port-Jeanne d\u2019Arc in Morbihan Bay.<\/p>\n<p>The oil carrier Jeanne d\u2019Arc (76 m, 1332 t) and three whale catchers (two sister ships Espoir and \u00c9clair, 51 m, 540 t, and Etoile, 30 m, 165 t) were linked to the station. The total whale catch resulting from this activity was 442 whales (95% humpback, the balance right whales). Their best year was in 1908 when 232 whales were caught and a total of 13 760 barrels of oil were produced. Activity progressively shifted to hunting elephant seals with peak production in 1911 of 10 680 barrels and a total production of 17 000 barrels of oil. Les peaux d&rsquo;otaries \u00e0 fourrure sal\u00e9es (<em>Arctocephalus gazella<\/em>) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier produit \u00eatre commercialis\u00e9 par les armateurs de Nantucket (USA) et de Londres (Royaume-Uni), principalement sur les \u00eeles Kerguelen, et au d\u00e9but du 19\u00e8me si\u00e8cle les colonies de phoques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cim\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Port Jeanne d&#039;Arc (Kerguelen archipelago), remembering a human adventure\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dwAcpFxBGzE?wmode=trans\nparent&amp;rel=0&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;exploitation des esp\u00e8ces marines sur le plateau de Kerguelen a commenc\u00e9 peu apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9couverte le 13 f\u00e9vrier 1772 des \u00eeles Kerguelen septentrionales par l&rsquo;exp\u00e9dition de Y.J. de Kerguelen de<br \/>\nTr\u00e9marec avec le <em>Gros Ventre<\/em>et la <em>Fortune<\/em>.<br \/>\nLes premiers voyages au phoque (1791-1793) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 signal\u00e9s aux \u00c9tats-Unis d&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique et au Royaume-Uni vingt ans plus tard. Pendant plus de 50 ans au cours de cette premi\u00e8re p\u00e9riode, le scellement a eu lieu<br \/>\nuniquement autour des \u00eeles Kerguelen. Ce n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;avec le d\u00e9veloppement des voyages de chasse \u00e0 la baleine et de chasse au phoque dans la r\u00e9gion que les chasseurs de phoque de la c\u00f4te nord-est des \u00c9tats-Unis ont d\u00e9couvert la deuxi\u00e8me et<br \/>\nterrain de chasse au phoque sud sur le plateau, \u00eeles Heard et mcDonald, lors de la croisi\u00e8re 1853-1855 du <em>Corinthian.<br \/>\n<\/em>L&rsquo;exploitation des ressources marines du plateau de Kerguelen ne d\u00e9buta qu&rsquo;en 1790 (XVIII \u00e8me si\u00e8cle) apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9couverte des \u00eeles Kerguelen septentrionales en 1772. Otarie \u00e0 fourrure sal\u00e9e<br \/>\n(Arctocephalus gazella) fut le premier produit commercialis\u00e9 par les armateurs de Nantucket (usa) et de londres (royaume-uni), principalement sur t Phase 1, 1908-1911 : la station baleini\u00e8re de Port Jeanne<br \/>\nd&rsquo;Arc et la campagne de Mangoro (1910).<br \/>\nUne licence exclusive de 50 ans a \u00e9t\u00e9 accord\u00e9e aux fr\u00e8res Bossi\u00e8re par le gouvernement fran\u00e7ais le 31 juillet 1897 pour l&rsquo;exploitation des \u00eeles Kerguelen. Au cours de la premi\u00e8re p\u00e9riode (1908-1911)<br \/>\nils ont c\u00e9d\u00e9 les droits \u00e0 deux soci\u00e9t\u00e9s, Aktieselskabet Kerguelen et Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des P\u00eacheries de Kerguelen (Arnaud et Beurois, 1996). Storm, Bull &#038; Co. qui \u00e9tait actif depuis<br \/>\n1908-1911 \u00e9tablit une station-usine baleini\u00e8re \u00e0 Port-Jeanne d&rsquo;Arc dans la baie du Morbihan.<\/p>\n<p>Le p\u00e9trolier Jeanne d&rsquo;Arc (76 m, 1332 t) et trois baleiniers (deux sisterships Espoir et \u00c9clair, 51 m, 540 t, et Etoile, 30 m, 165 t) \u00e9taient reli\u00e9s \u00e0 la station. La baleine totale<br \/>\nles prises r\u00e9sultant de cette activit\u00e9 \u00e9taient de 442 baleines (95 % baleines \u00e0 bosse, le reste \u00e9tant des baleines franches). Leur meilleure ann\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 en 1908 lorsque 232 baleines ont \u00e9t\u00e9 captur\u00e9es et un total de 13 760 barils de p\u00e9trole ont \u00e9t\u00e9<br \/>\nproduit. L&rsquo;activit\u00e9 s&rsquo;oriente progressivement vers la chasse aux \u00e9l\u00e9phants de mer avec un pic de production en 1911 de 10 680 barils et une production totale de 17 000 barils de p\u00e9trole.
