Thanks to them we have been able to put in the Directory, many Antarctic sites brought &#8220;On Air&#8221; by radio amateurs.<\/p>\n<p>This is confirmed today by this new entry <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>KC4USY Ross Island Field Camp<\/strong><\/span> (aka <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>McMurdo Sound<\/strong><\/span>) at <strong>77\u00b050&#8217;North, 166\u00b040&#8217;East<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9098 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/KC4USY-rear-description-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/KC4USY-rear-description-231x300.jpg 231w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/KC4USY-rear-description-38x50.jpg 38w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/KC4USY-rear-description.jpg 606w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the rear side of KC4USY\u2019s QSL, we can read a note reported by <strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Richard F Przywitowski WA\u00d8SHZ<\/span><\/em><\/strong> ,&nbsp; Ski (WA\u00d8SHZ) was the operator of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>KC4USY<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>KC4USY<\/strong>, on Ross Island, was active from March to October 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Near this QTH is McMurdo Station and Mt. Erebus, one of the few active volcanoes in Antarctica. Adelie and Emperor penguins, seals and skua gulls are the only wildlife in the area. Temperatures range from plus 30\u00b0 to minus 40\u00b0 F. over the year; high winds being common to the QTH, our highest of the year was recorded at 101 knots.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the site was to monitor and record geophysical phenomena which are associated with the upper atmosphere. Areas of interest were optical emissions of the sky, aurora study, ultra-low frequency recording and Doppler shift detection of known RF sources.<\/p>\n<p>Antarctica being an unique location for these studies, thus our being there. <strong>Only<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>469<\/strong> <\/span><strong>contacts were made by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">KC4USY<\/span><\/strong>, power generally being less 75 watts.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mny tnx to all who gave a shout, 73. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rickard F. They were only there for a short time,&nbsp; back then they would go out and set up summer camps for a month or two. Then break them down.<\/p>\n<p>I was in a QSO with Willy Field one night when a crew member came into the shack and told the op to come outside. A penguin had walking into camp and Willy Field was 200 miles from the water. They backtracked his tracks and found another set of tracks just outside the camp that went around the camp. Les manchots Ad\u00e9lie et Empereur, les phoques et les go\u00e9lands skua sont les seuls animaux sauvages de la r\u00e9gion. Les temp\u00e9ratures varient de plus 30\u00b0 \u00e0 moins 40\u00b0 F. au cours de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e ; les vents violents \u00e9tant communs au QTH, notre plus haut de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9 \u00e0 101 n\u0153uds.<\/p>\n<p>Le but du site \u00e9tait de surveiller et d&rsquo;enregistrer les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes g\u00e9ophysiques associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la haute atmosph\u00e8re. Ils n&rsquo;\u00e9taient l\u00e0 que pour un court<br \/>\ntemps, \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, ils sortaient et organisaient des camps d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 pendant un mois ou deux. Ensuite, d\u00e9composez-les.<\/p>\n<p>J&rsquo;\u00e9tais dans un QSO avec Willy Field une nuit quand un membre de l&rsquo;\u00e9quipage est entr\u00e9 dans la cabane et a dit \u00e0 l&rsquo;op de sortir.
