{"id":15708,"date":"2021-08-09T07:10:06","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T06:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.on4cn.be\/blog_radio\/?p=15708"},"modified":"2021-08-09T07:10:06","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T06:10:06","slug":"little-jeana-station-wap-usa-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.on4cn.be\/blog_radio\/2021\/08\/09\/little-jeana-station-wap-usa-47\/","title":{"rendered":"LITTLE JEANA STATION, WAP USA-47"},"content":{"rendered":"<article class=\"article\">\n<center><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">LITTLE JEANA STATION, WAP USA-47 a brand new reference issued<\/span><\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b><time class=\"entry-date published\" datetime=\"2021-08-06T23:47:50+01:00\">6 Agosto 2021<\/time><\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7763 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KC4USZ_10-1-1966_W8OAR-Little-Jeana-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \nwidth=\"242\" height=\"300\" \/>It was not an easy task to retrace the history of <strong>Little Jeana Station<\/strong> but thanks to our friend <strong>Bill Ashley  KF5BRB<\/strong>  who did<br \/>\nprovide a QSL ofthis rare one,  WAP is now in condition to issue to <strong>LITTLE JEANA STATION<\/strong> (aka <strong>Little Jeana Summer Weather Station<\/strong>) a brand new WAP<br \/>\nreference as  <strong>USA-47<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>KC4USZ <\/strong>card , prove that an activity on Jan. 10<sup>th<\/sup> 1966 from this epic rare one by a QSO made with <strong>W8OAR<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>US Station Little Jeana<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Bulletin of the Antarctic US Projects officer<\/strong> (Vol.6 number 2-1964), signed by <strong>Rear Admiral James R. Reedy<\/strong>, USN United States Antarctic Projects<br \/>\nOfficer, show a presentation of activities of the Government of the United States of America pertaining to the logistic support, scientific programs, and current events of interest in<br \/>\nAntarctica, published monthly during the austral summer season and distributed to organizations, groups, and individuals interested in United States Antarctic activities.<\/p>\n<p>The data in the over mentioned issues suggest that <strong>Little Jeana<\/strong> was active from <strong>3 oct.64 to 23 feb.65<\/strong>,  from  <strong>2 oct.65  to 31 oct.65<\/strong><br \/>\nand again from  <strong>1 dec.65 to 22 jan.66<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUMMER WEATHER STATIONS REESTABLISHED <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prior to the first aircraft landing at the South Pole, on 31 October 1956, a summer weather and emergency-landing station (Beardmore I Station WAP USA-NEW) was established at the foot of<br \/>\nLiv Glacier . This station was later moved to the foot of the Glacier, from which it derived its name, and has been moved or rebuilt several times since.<\/p>\n<p>When aircraft began to resupply Byrd Station (WAP USA-19), another summer weather station, <strong>Little Rockford <\/strong>(WAP USA-NEW), was set up on the flight path from McMurdo<br \/>\nSound to Byrd Station. It has also been relocated, at 79\u00b014&#8242; South,  147\u00b029&#8242; West, on the Rockefeller Plateau.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for the current season called for remodeling the 2 stations, using van-type buildings similar to those that have proved successful at <strong>Eights Station <\/strong>(WAP USA-\u00d87).<\/p>\n<p>Advantage was taken of the opportunity to shift the location of <strong>Beardmore Station<\/strong> (WAP USA-NEW) to 81\u00b023&#8242; South, 170\u00b015&#8242; East, about 125 miles north of the previous site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7764 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Little-Jeana-2a-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><br \/>\nAt the same time the station has been renamed<strong> &#8220;Little Jeana Summer Weather Station&#8221;<\/strong> and officially opened on 5 October 1964. The installation consists of 4<br \/>\nportable units, 3 of which are arranged in a &#8220;U&#8221;. (29 September 1961.)<\/p>\n<p>The center of the &#8220;U&#8221; has been turned into a permawalk, and here the pibal dome is located. The fourth unit has communications equipment and is separated from the others<br \/>\nsothat it may, if needed, serve as an emergency shelter.<\/p>\n<p>Little Rockford was reestablished the same day Little Jeana was opened. This installation has consisted of wanigans that were put in position in 1958 by tractors from <strong>Little<br \/>\nAmerica<\/strong> and later moved to the present site by the same means. These four pieces were the setup for the use of 3 people.  2 for 1800-gallon fuel tanks to be installed (bladder<br \/>\ntechnology used instead).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Bulletin 4 says: <\/em><\/span> \u201c\u2026. manned by 3 Navy aerographers who broadcast weather conditions hourly\u201d.  Summer support season = 1 October through 1<br \/>\nMarch.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Bulletin 5, 8 February 1965 says<\/span>: <\/em>Communications van returned to McMurdo, digging out of station commenced.
