At its most<br \/>\npopulous, typically during the summer, it houses about 1,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Their only connection to the outside world comes in the form of satellite systems, which provide limited and fragile access to the internet. That means hundreds of people share a slow<br \/>\nand intermittent internet connection.<\/p>\n<p>Now, scientists hope to bring <strong>Antarctica<\/strong> into the 21st century. They\u2019re pushing for a fiber optic cable \u2014 the fastest form of internet technology \u2014 that would extend<br \/>\nfrom New Zealand or Australia all the way down to McMurdo Station.<\/p>\n<p>The idea has been floating around for years, according to <em><strong>Peter Neff<\/strong><\/em>, a glaciologist at the <strong>University of Minnesota<\/strong>. But it\u2019s recently begun to<br \/>\ngain traction again.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>National Science Foundation<\/strong> sponsored a three-day workshop last month to examine the value such a cable could bring to <strong>Antarctica<\/strong>.
