{"id":15430,"date":"2021-05-26T06:15:49","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T05:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.on4cn.be\/blog_radio\/?p=15430"},"modified":"2021-05-26T06:15:49","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T05:15:49","slug":"kc4usw-ellsworth-mountains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.on4cn.be\/blog_radio\/2021\/05\/26\/kc4usw-ellsworth-mountains\/","title":{"rendered":"KC4USW Ellsworth Mountains"},"content":{"rendered":"<article class=\"article\">\n<center><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">KC4USW Ellsworth Mountains Camp WAP USA-46, New Entry on WAP-WADA<\/span><\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b><time class=\"entry-date published\" datetime=\"2021-05-24T22:04:23+01:00\">24 Maggio 2021<\/time><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to<strong> Jim Reisert AD1C  <\/strong>and <strong> Alan Jubb 5B4AHJ <\/strong>for their continuous research and help, WAP has just issued a new Reference to the <strong>US<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ellsworth Mountains Camp <\/strong>referred to the activity of<strong> KC4USW<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>First of all, <strong>Ellsworth Mountains Camp <\/strong>(<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>WAP USA-NEW<\/strong><\/span>) has not to be confused with <strong>Ellsworth<br \/>\nStation <\/strong>(<strong>WAP USA-31<\/strong>) and <strong>Ellsworth Base<\/strong> (<strong>WAP ARG-14<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>KC4USW<\/strong> was QRV from <strong>McMurdo Station,<\/strong> Ross Island (WAP USA-22), in 1957  before moving to <strong>Ellsworth Mountains Camp<\/strong>, from where he was QRV<br \/>\nuntil February 1959. CQ May 1959 gives the last day of operation from Ellsworth Station as 1959,Febr.1<sup>st<\/sup>  (<em>letter from W8LIO<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7477 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/KC4USW-1957-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" \/>MARIST<br \/>\nArchives &amp; Special Collections has available a recording of an interview with Antarctic explorer <strong><em>Captain Finn Ronne<\/em><\/strong> from amateur radio station <strong>KC4USW<br \/>\n<\/strong>, Weddel Sea, Antarctica, dated 1957, Nov.11.<br \/>\nFor sure,  QSL of that date (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>pic on the Left<\/em><\/span>) is a genuine one for <strong>Ellsworth Mountains Camp <\/strong>at 79\u00b007&#8217;00&#8221; South,<br \/>\n85\u00b039&#8217;00&#8221; West, on Ellswort Mountains, Weddell Sea area (The <strong>Weddell Sea<\/strong> is part of the Southern Ocean and contains the Weddell Gyre. Its land boundaries are<br \/>\ndefined by the bay formed from the coasts of Coats Land and the Antarctic Peninsula. The easternmost point is Cape Norway at Princess Martha Coast, Queen Maud Land. To the east of Cape<br \/>\nNorway is the King Haakon VII Sea. Much of the southern part of the sea is covered by a permanent, massive Ice Shelf field, the <strong>Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ellsworth station<\/strong>, the one we know after 1957-1959, was another entity built later , that\u2019s why  KC4USW has been used when  QRV from <strong>Ellsworth Station<\/strong><br \/>\nin 1979-80, and why CQ January 1996 reports KC4USW as QRV from Ellsworth. 1979-80 QSL (tnx ND4V): Note that the 1979\/80 QSL shown in Club Log says &#8220;Ellsworth Mts (Mountains)&#8221;.<br \/>\n(<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>See pic on the Right here below<\/em><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p><strong><u><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A bit of history<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7476 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/KC4USW-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><br \/>\n(Ellsworth Mountains Camp <\/strong>mistakenly called Ellsworth Station<strong>) <\/strong>was built by US Navy Seabees under the command of <em>Capt. Finn Ronne<\/em> with the support of the<br \/>\nIcebreackers USS Staten Island and USS Wyandot.<\/p>\n<p>The originally planned site for the station was Cape Adams, but when the terrain proved impractical due to huge ice cliffs, an alternate location on Gould Bay was selected, on the western<br \/>\ncoast of the Wededell Sea over the Filchner Ice Shelf, and close to the Argentinean <strong>Belgrano I Base<\/strong> (WAP ARG-\u00d85).<\/p>\n<p>Part of the scheduled agenda for the IGY, Ellsworth Station was commissioned on <strong>11 February 1957<\/strong> and less than two years later, on <strong>17 January 1959<\/strong>, was<br \/>\nhanded over to the <strong>Argentinean Antarctic Institute<\/strong>. Along with the handover, the United States government gave all the buildings, facilities, and existing food supplies<br \/>\nwhile Argentina provided the logistical and administrative services necessary for the continued operation of the station. It was agreed that scientists of both countries would work together<br \/>\nat the place in technical studies and scientific research.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7478 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/KC4USW-1979-WA4VCB-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" \/><br \/>\nFeasibility of the station came into question when structural problems caused by the unstable ice had the base half-sunken during most of the spring. To protect personnel and equipment,<br \/>\n<strong>Ellsworth Mountains Camp<\/strong> (mistakenly called <strong>Ellsworth Base)<\/strong> was closed and all of its staff and equipment were evacuated on 30 December 1962, during the<br \/>\n1962\u201363 Antarctic summer campaign. It continued to be inspected periodically by Argentinean exploration teams: it was eventually covered by snow and ice. The Filchner Shelf sector where it<br \/>\nwas located as split off a giant iceberg, and then it drifted through the Southern Ocean, where the base&#8217;s remains have been lost at sea.<\/p>\n<p>So, it looks like the <strong>Ellsworth Station (WAP-USA-31)<\/strong> and <strong>Ellsworth Base (WAP ARG-14)<\/strong> both at  <strong>77\u00b0 39\u2019 S, 41\u00b0 05\u2019 W<\/strong> were the same one.<br \/>\nThe 1<sup>st<\/sup>,  the one managed by US, the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>  managed by LU when it was turned over to Argentina.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ellsworth Mountain Camp  (WAP-USA-NEW) <\/strong>was located at<strong> 79\u00b007\u2019S, 85\u00b039\u2019W<\/strong> and it was in activity <strong>only  from 1957 through 1959<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The ones reported active from 1979-80 and 1996 are referred to <strong>Ellsworth Station 77\u00b0 39\u2019 S, 41\u00b0 05\u2019 W, s<\/strong>o,  2 different locations which may confuse a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Following the <strong>KC4USW<\/strong>  QSL dated 1957, WAP is issuing <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>WAP USA-46<\/strong> <\/span> reference to <strong>Ellsworth Mountain Camp,<br \/>\n79\u00b007\u2019S, 85\u00b039\u2019W on <\/strong><strong>Ellswort Mountains, Weddell Sea area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><strong>TNX Jim AD1C <\/strong>and<strong> Alan 5B4AHJ<\/strong>. Ses limites terrestres sont<br \/>\nd\u00e9finie par la baie form\u00e9e des c\u00f4tes de Coats Land et de la p\u00e9ninsule antarctique. Le point le plus \u00e0 l&rsquo;est est le cap de Norv\u00e8ge sur la c\u00f4te de la princesse Martha, sur la terre de la reine Maud. \u00c0 l&rsquo;est du cap<br \/>\nLa Norv\u00e8ge est la mer du roi Haakon VII.
