N. Bonner<\/em> and <em>B. Stonehouse<\/em>, funded by Falkland Islands Dependencies Government and administered by FIDS, did allocate letter <strong>\u201dN\u201d<\/strong>  to the station set  at 54\u00b003\u2019South, 37\u00b023\u2019West<em>, <\/em>at Ample Bay, Bay of Isles, South Georgia<strong> . <\/strong>The initial though, even if that was later considered a private expedition, <strong>Station N (1) <\/strong>was set to study Biology and was occupied from <strong>1953<\/strong> through <strong>1955<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The buildings consist in a main hut and small store hut. Main hut had burnt down by 1974. The site is on what is now known as Amsler Island. Rapid recession of the ice due to global warming revealed Amsler Island as a separate island in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Amsler Island was the original site of the United States Antarctic Program research base Palmer (Old Palmer) from 1965 until the current station approximately 0.8 km (0.5 mi) away was constructed in 1968.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6887 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Old-Palmer-building-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Old-Palmer-building-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Old-Palmer-building-1024x577.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Old-Palmer-building-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Old-Palmer-building-50x28.jpg 50w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Old-Palmer-building.jpg 1357w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cOld Palmer\u201d<\/strong> (<em>Pic to the right<\/em>) served as a base for those building <strong>&#8220;New Palmer&#8221;<\/strong>, which opened in 1968. Old Palmer was designated as an emergency refuge for the new station in case of disaster, though this perceived need disappeared over time. It was dismantled and removed from the Antarctic as part of the National Science Foundation&#8217;s environmental cleanup efforts in the early 1990s. According to <em>Mehdi F5PFP<\/em>, <strong>Old Palmer<\/strong> <strong>Station<\/strong> at Arthur Harbour  was active on air by <strong>KC4AAC 1963<\/strong> &amp;  <strong>KC4USP 1965<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">WAP<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">is now in  process to issue a new reference to<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;Old Palmer Station&#8221;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">at<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Amsler Island<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">to recognize the two distinct evolution phases of the history of both Palmer Bases<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6889 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Station-N-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Station-N-300x192.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Station-N-50x32.jpg 50w, http:\/\/www.waponline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Station-N.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Station N<\/strong> (2) was re-open by the British in support of air facility 1969-1971 (<em>pic to the left<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>On 28 Dec 1971 the station has been destroyed by fire while being renovated by BAS. Debris was removed by the members of the US Antarctic Program in 1990\/91.
